Nomination Procedures

The Nomination Date for the upcoming Town of Paradise By-election is Thursday, April 11, 2019. Nominations of candidates will be received on this date between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at Town Hall, 28 McNamara Drive. It is recommended that individuals make an appointment with the Returning Officer by calling 709.782.1400.

In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, the following procedures (MEF-01) must be followed to become a candidate.

  • A candidate must be nominated by two persons eligible to vote in the Town.
  • Nominations must be in writing; stating the name and address of the candidate. The Nomination and Declaration of Qualification by Candidate Form (MEF-02) should be completed and signed by the nominee, proposer and seconder. The proposer and seconder must be present with the candidate at the time of nomination.
  • The Nomination Form for Candidates Unable to Be Present on Nomination Day (MEF-03) may be used if a candidate is unable to be present during the time of nomination. Nominators must be present, and have declaration that the candidate is qualified to be nominated and accepts the nomination.
  • Nomination Fee: Each candidate must pay a non-refundable nomination fee in the amount of $10 at the time of nomination.

As soon as the nomination paper is filed, the information about an individual’s candidacy becomes public information.

Withdrawing Nomination

A person who has been nominated may withdraw his or her nomination by filing with the Returning Officer a written withdrawal and the nomination fee is forfeited.

Qualifications of Candidates

In order to run for council, an individual must:
  • be eligible to vote in the municipal election;
  • not be in arrears of taxes or other charges payable to the Town of Paradise; and
  • be ordinarily resident for a period of 30 days before the commencement of nomination day
