The Town of Paradise today announced a new initiative that maps out its recommitment to progressive waste management and environmental sustainability encouraging residents and businesses to do their part to help the environment. The Green Goal program was launched as part of Municipal Awareness Days 2023. On May 10 and 11, Grade 6 students from Paradise Schools visit the Town to learn about municipal operations including the Green Goal and how they can do their part at home and at school to help live greener and reduce our environmental footprint.
The Green Goal initiative is a multifaceted approach to environmental sustainability. With an initial focus on 4Rs - reducing, reusing, recycling, and repairing - the Town program aims to educate residents, businesses, and community groups to be inspired to make better decisions about waste and the environment.
“We’re excited to launch our Green Goal initiative and work towards doing our part for environmental sustainability. As a fast-growing municipality with the youngest average age population, we have the opportunity to make a big change for the future. We want to lead a Green Goal movement and we know Paradise can do it,” said Mayor Dan Bobbett.
As part of the Green Goal, waste reduction and diversion are being enhanced at Town operations, offices, and recreational facilities. The objective is to reduce everything from single-use items to carbon emissions and make Paradise a greener place to live and work for years to come. For example; exploring environmentally friendly solutions such as solar lights in Paradise Park; and using electric vehicles such as the battery-operated Zamboni at the Paradise Double Ice Complex.
“Our new Green Goal program is an all-encompassing, long-term approach that offers practical ways to be eco-friendly as we strive to strike a balance between modern living and environmental sustainability in Paradise,” said Mayor Bobbett.
The Green Goal is not just the 4Rs, the broad-based program also includes environmental sustainability initiatives. The Town is continuing to work under its Climate Change Action Plan. It also undertook a waste management study with the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board which showed the waste reduction and recycling rates in the Town are extremely low. Through Town initiatives, programs and public education, the focus is on improving all areas of environmental stewardship and encourage residents, businesses, and community groups to make green living a part of their daily lives.
“With the substantial growth that the Town of Paradise continues to experience, it’s more important than ever to invest in educating the community, local and prospective businesses, and stakeholders about creating a greener space,” said Mayor Bobbett. “We want the Green Goal to be a collective effort between the Town and all our community partners. Let’s work together to reduce waste, pollution and consumption our daily lives for the betterment of our environment today and for generations to come.”
