The Town of Paradise today marked the start of construction of a new multi-sport turf field at the Dianne Whalen Memorial Soccer Complex. The Town is investing $2million to construct the field and install new lighting at the facility.
Mayor Dan Bobbett and Councillors were joined by representatives from Paradise Soccer Club and Avalon Minor Football for the event.
“The multi-sport turf and new lighting are needed enhancements to the Dianne Whalen Memorial Soccer Complex, and we understand the benefits it will bring to the minor sporting programs,” said Mayor Bobbett. “Our Open Space and Recreation Master Plan outlined the need and benefits of a multi-use turf field. It is an important investment and that is why the Town is committed to fully fund this project.”
The multi-sport turf field can be used by soccer, baseball, and football minor sporting programs, which will help grow these sports in the Town and throughout the region. The enhanced lighting at the Complex will mean that two fields are available for more hours of play, training, and games for participants.
“The multi-sport turf field will help to grow other sports and recreational programming in the Town. It will also enable us to attract provincial, and hopefully national, level tournaments. This in turn brings spin-offs to support our business and community groups. The benefits reach far beyond just minor sports, and we are excited to see this project get underway,” added Mayor Bobbett.
Construction of the multi-sport turf field will begin this Fall and continue as long as weather permits. Work will then resume in the Spring and with the field set to be operational for the 2022 sporting season. +
