May 20, 2016: The Town of Paradise today announced the details of the new Automated Garbage Collection Program. The wheeled carts will be delivered to households starting Tuesday, May 24, 2016 with collection using the automated garbage trucks to begin Monday, July 4, 2016.
“Automated Garbage Collection is easy, clean, and safe,” said Mayor Dan Bobbett. “We are constantly working to ensure Town operations are effective and efficient and we are excited to bring this new modern garbage collection method to the Town of Paradise.”
With Automated Garbage Collection residents simply wheel plastic carts out for collection, eliminating the need to cover garbage with blankets and nets. The carts are emptied using a mechanical arm on the truck, which eliminates the need for workers to lift and haul the garbage. It allows for a clean, safe and efficient waste collection process.
The Town of Paradise is providing wheeled carts to all registered households. If there is more than one dwelling in a house, for example if there is a registered apartment, a cart will be delivered for each dwelling. The carts are equipped with an embedded radio tag which helps to manage inventory, verify the correct address for misplaced carts, and record the replacement history of individual carts.
“The wheeled carts hold the equivalent of five to six bags of garbage, sufficient for household residential waste. Residents are required to recycle fibre products, plastics and cans. This reduces the amount of garbage to place in the carts and the amount going to the landfill which helps the environment,” explained Mayor Bobbett.
Only Town-supplied carts can be used for Automated Garbage Collection. Once the program begins, residents will have to remove garbage boxes and they can call the Town, 782-1400, to dispose of the garbage box in bulk collection. If residents have a garbage cart or moveable garbage box, they are encouraged to think about re-purposing it.
There will be no changes to the 2016 garbage and recycling collection schedule. Starting July 4, 2016, residents will use the wheeled carts for their regular garbage collection. An Automated Garbage Collection program guide is attached to the inside cover of each cart. Residents are encouraged to review the guide or visit the Town website for the full details on the program.
