The Town of Paradise advises that the State of Emergency remains in place for the area of Town serviced by Lift Station 10 and the situation continues to be stable.
“I assure residents that our main priorities are maintaining the essential service and working to end the State of Emergency as soon as it’s possible to do so,” said Mayor Dan Bobbett. “This is an extremely frustrating situation for everyone. We know our residents in the area are dealing with the noise and inconvenience of pumper trucks at the site and we sincerely apologize for the situation.”
The Town has secured two pumps which are in transit as the type and size needed to support Lift Station 10 are not available within the province. However, the delivery of the equipment has been impacted by weather and the arrival is contingent on the ferry crossings. Once the pumps are on site, crews will use one pump to create a bypass of the system which will reduce the number of pumper trucks needed and thereby reduce the noise levels in the area. They will use the other pump to operate the lift station.
“Once the pumps arrive and a bypass is in place, the State of Emergency can be lifted. Until then, we continue to ask residents in the affected area to reduce the amount of water going down the drain, such as limit flushing toilets, using washing machines and running dishwashers, as this supports work on-going at the Lift Station 10 site. We know this is an inconvenience, but less wastewater helps keep the service operational for residents. We sincerely thank residents for their ongoing patience and understanding,” said Mayor Bobbett.
Town staff are continuously tracking the shipment of the two pumps and crews are ready to install them once they arrive. Staff are also monitoring the weather, and crews are available to respond to any weather changes.
The intersection of Topsail Road and St. Thomas Line remains closed with all traffic diverted through Lanark Drive to Stanhope Drive to Topsail Road. Local residents can access their properties. Municipal Enforcement are patrolling the area to monitor traffic throughout the detour.
Lift Station 10, located on the corner of Topsail Road and St. Thomas Line, handles the largest volume of wastewater in Paradise. The age, capacity, and needed upgrades to Lift Station 10 prompted the Town to invest in a new facility. Construction of the new $24million lift station started in January 2023 and it is expected to be operational in Winter 2025. To date, this project is on track and on budget.
