The Town of Paradise is seeking local visual artists to take part in the province’s first-ever Paint the Pavement project, a project aimed at building community spirit, encouraging artistic talent, and calming traffic through the use of large street murals.
“Paint the Pavement initiatives have started up all over the country and throughout the United States and we are excited to be the first in the province to take part in this progressive movement,” said Mayor Dan Bobbett. “We are continually looking for innovative ways to beautify our Town and support local talent, and Paint the Pavement does exactly that with the added benefit of potentially slowing traffic near our school zones.”
Paint the Pavement initiatives are becoming increasingly popular amongst Canadian and U.S. communities as a means of bringing the attention of drivers to the road through the creation of large and colourful street murals. These murals also create neighbourhood pride as they showcase the talent of local artists and create pleasing visuals throughout communities.
With support from the Community Healthy Living Fund from the Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, the Town’s Paint the Pavement project will begin this June as a pilot in intersections near Paradise’s three elementary schools: Holy Family Elementary, Paradise Elementary and Elizabeth Park Elementary. The successful artistic applicant will work with local elementary school students to design and paint the street murals in all three intersections throughout the Town.
“As a collaborative effort involving local artists and students from our three elementary schools, these street murals will be a true showcase of community pride. The support already shown by our school community has been tremendous,” added Mayor Bobbett.
