Seasonal Road Maintenance

The Town conducts several maintenance programs throughout the Spring and Summer seasons to maintain roads and infrastructure. Residents can learn more about each in the descriptions below.

The Temporary Asphalt Repair Program provides short-term repairs to address potholes, deteriorated utility cuts, and emergency road surface failures during the winter and early spring months. These temporary repairs help maintain safe driving conditions, protect roadway infrastructure, and prevent further damage until permanent repairs can be completed during the construction season. Work is prioritized to address the most critical areas first, including major arterials, bus routes, and school zones, followed by commercial and collector roads, residential streets, and lower-traffic areas.

The Catch-Basin Cleaning Program is conducted annually from May to July to help prevent street flooding, reduce pollutants from entering local waterways, and maintain the proper function of the Town’s storm drainage system. Regular cleaning of catch basins removes sediment, leaves, and debris that can cause blockages and reduce flow capacity, helping to protect roads, properties, and underground infrastructure. Work is prioritized in flood-prone and low-lying areas, near schools, and at high-traffic intersections and commercial zones, followed by residential neighbourhoods and low-flow or dead-end streets.

The Fire Hydrant Flushing and Repair Program is conducted annually from June to September to maintain the performance and reliability of the Town’s water distribution and fire protection systems. Flushing begins in residential and dead-end areas where water circulation is lower and water quality concerns are typically highest. The program ensures all fire hydrants remain operational and ready for emergency use while also improving overall water quality by removing sediment buildup throughout the community. Inspections and maintenance activities are also carried out in commercial and industrial areas, along with ongoing planning and quality assurance to support system reliability.

The Roadside Ditching – Non-Full-Service Areas Program is conducted annually from April to August to restore and maintain proper drainage along rural and suburban roads without curb and gutter infrastructure. Effective ditch maintenance helps prevent roadway flooding, reduce shoulder erosion, protect municipal infrastructure, and support long-term roadbed stability. Work is prioritized in areas with known flooding or drainage complaints, particularly near homes, followed by locations where poor shoulder drainage is affecting the road surface or undermining pavement edges. Additional maintenance addresses overgrown or sediment-heavy ditches that limit flow capacity, along with routine inspections to ensure continued performance.

The Street Sign Repair and Replacement Program is conducted annually from May to July to ensure the visibility, accuracy, and safety of road signage throughout the community. The program includes the inspection, documentation, cleaning, and repair or replacement of damaged, faded, or missing signs to maintain compliance with provincial and national standards. By prioritizing high-traffic areas and school zones, the program supports improved traffic safety, clear navigation, and overall roadway efficiency.

The Street and Sidewalk Sweeping Program is conducted annually from April to September to maintain clean roadways and sidewalks, improve water quality by reducing stormwater pollution, and enhance overall neighbourhood aesthetics. Streets are swept according to a defined priority system, beginning with major arterial roads and business corridors, followed by residential and lower-traffic streets as required. The sweeping schedule may be adjusted to coordinate with road line painting, accommodate special events such as the TELY 10 Road Race, or respond to emergency and weather-related conditions.
